Ellie specializes in working with persons who have experienced trauma and considers herself an existential therapist. She believes that through suffering we often gain clarity and can find our purpose
in life.
Ellie has both personal and professional experience with domestic violence and substance abuse.
She operates as a harm reduction therapist and believes in safe drug use for all and advocates for harm
reduction laws in Iowa.
Ellie has worked with families of persons who have addictions to help them learn healthy boundaries
and navigate difficult relationships with their loved ones. Ellie understands addiction and knows that
everyone’s recovery path looks different and has helped support clients by meeting them where they
are at in their journey.
Ellie Van Dam uses supportive psychotherapy and is trained in EMDR. EMDR is her preferred evidence-
based therapy model but integrates other forms of therapy modalities into her work such as CBT,
motivational interviewing, mindfulness and meditation. Ellie works mostly with adult individuals.
